‘Gravity - Sand Creatures’: A series by Claire Droppert

“Sand comes alive and creatures are born in frozen moments of weightlessness...”.

Growing up near the beach, my lifestyle has always been synonymous with the sea and the great open stretch of landscape that surrounds it. I’m fascinated by nature, I enjoy observing and being part of my surroundings. Whilst at our local beach in the Netherlands, I saw my daughter playing and kicking sand up in the air. As she did this I noticed the sunlight shine through and the effect looked impressive. As gravity and light took control, I saw interesting shapes of sand being created. This formed the basis of my idea, which eventually, I began to capture.

Armed with a shovel, optimal lighting conditions, a tripod and a high shutter speed camera, I made my way around a series of Dutch beaches and created my first Sand Creatures series. ‘Sand Creatures I’ focuses on nature in an unexpected way. The explosive and at times powdery scenes of the grainy sand being thrown into the air can be taken as a manifesting life form, as they become sand creatures. When you’re a kid, a cloud can look as much like a rabbit as a floating mass of water vapour. Even as adults, no one is immune to the magic moment when a random gathering of molecules morphs into fantasy animals or familiar forms. It’s a hallmark of the childlike, playful interaction with the world that we too often lose with age.

In this unique, animated NFT collection, the Sand Creatures come to life, blown away by the fresh sea breeze off the Dutch coast. The series forms part of my ongoing 'Gravity Project', where the earth's different elements are captured to let them stand out in their natural surroundings using moments of zero gravity.

The works have been featured in several publications including The Huffington Post, Wired, Gizmodo, ABCNews, This is Colossal, Fubiz and Collateral and have been exhibited in national- and international exhibitions in Zurich, Brussels, Paris and Amsterdam.
