The island I have visited, was the island of Langeland, which is located between the Great Belt and Bay of Kiel and easy to drive to from The Netherlands.
Bridges connect the mainland of Fyn through the islands TÃ¥singe and Langeland, which is a very scenic route.
Langeland is a 60 km long and relaxing island, known for its wellness and great walking and cycling possibilities. For instance Fyn’s famous Archipelago hiking trail and popular cycling routes. The island contains some wonderful gems and exciting nature experiences, which a few of them, I will highlight in this blog.
Landscape of Langeland
Many people say that Langeland is such a beautiful island, and for a good reason! There is something on this island for everyone to wonder, with an amazing, varied landscape. The island holds some quite unique and interesting places in nature and has an interesting hilly landscape. Take the winded roads and paths to discover what awaits on the other side of the corner. Everywhere on this island you will find the most amazing coastal regions with cliffs and quiet beaches. It contains pristine landscapes and wild swamps, where for a few days, you can escape your busy, everyday life and just get back to nature. Langeland has a rich fauna – you could very well see a porpoise in the water, and do not miss out on the rare butterflies and wild horses while you are here!
A sustainable stay
On the island, I stayed at Tiki Camp, which was founded in 2018 and is Denmarks first ever Glamping! It is located in Tranekær, the sea is only a few hundred meters away and you will be able to spot it from the camp. The campingsite lies in the midst of a cozy hazelnut orchard, surrounded by beautiful old pine trees. Here, you will experience a unique, warm, playful and personal atmosphere, with eye for detail and our environment.
Glamping is for those who love the camping vibe, but with a little added luxury and Danish Hygge. It means enjoying the more simple things, like spending time together, cook and eat outdoors, explore freely, sit around the campfire, make music, read books or just listen to the birds or a crackling fire. It is not just a ‘glamping’. It’s about connecting with yourself, each other and nature.
Tip: Not far from the campsite, you will find the lovely town of Tranekær, and Tranekær Castle, which is worth visiting to explore it’s amazing medicine gardens and its open air art gallery.
The wild horses of Langeland
I am always blown away by the beauty of wild horses. You can find them near Dovns Klint, next to the Keldsnor lighthouse, just ask the locals about the vilde heste and you’ll get there. It is a beautiful spot to spend the day and a hikers paradise. The horses live here without interference of humans, except in the case of a very strict winter, then they will be fed to keep them healthy. It’s a great experience to walk beneath the beautiful beach, across rock platforms and the trees, to soak in breathtaking views over the sea and Dovns Klint, which distinctive appearance is due to the ravages of the last ice-age. During this time, a unique natural phenomenon was created on Langeland.
Keldsnor Lighthouse
It is worth going here for the scenic route to the lighthouse alone. As you drive through the beautiful countryside of south Langeland, you will find some peaceful and special landscapes. Beneath the beautiful Keldsnor Lighthouse you will find a very nice beach and natural area. In front of the lighthouse is a low cliff, but the rest of the shoreline is a pebble beach from which it is easy to enter the water. You can swim anywhere along this stretch, the clear waters are very inviting and most of the times, you will have all the beach to yourself! Of course, walking along the beach is also always a good way to explore too.
Peace and serenity at Langeland
Especially nowadays, you might be looking for a few days to get away from all of the busy destinations. I think Langeland is the perfect place to go to. With its lush forests, beautiful hills and deserted beaches, Langeland really is a place to get back to nature and find the tranquility. With the many invitable jetties and calm beaches that surround Langeland, it is also the perfect hideaway for a holiday with children. There is peace and quiet all around and on a clear night, you will be able to see an endless number of stars. I think all together, it makes this a great island to create beautiful memories for yourself and your family!
I would like to thank Visit Fyn for the many wonderful recommendations on the island and of course, VisitDenmark for making this trip possible. Check out their websites to find lots of travel inspiration!
